❓ FAQ
Q: Where is this fuel filter located on my Duramax truck, and how often should it be replaced? A: The ACDelco TP3018 is the primary engine-mounted spin-on fuel filter. On Duramax-equipped Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, it is located on the passenger side of the engine bay, tucked down toward the firewall near the inner fender well. GM typically recommends replacing this filter every 15,000 to 22,500 miles (or when the truck's Driver Information Center alert drops below 10%), though severe duty or heavy towing environments may require sooner intervals.
Q: Does this filter include the necessary replacement seals and the plastic water sensor? A: The TP3018 filter comes with the critical rubber sealing rings for installation, but it does not include a new plastic Water-In-Fuel (WIF) sensor or the bottom drain valve assembly. When changing the filter, you will carefully unscrew the plastic WIF sensor from the bottom of your old filter, clean it, replace its small rubber O-ring, and thread it into the bottom of the new ACDelco filter before spinning the cartridge onto the truck.
Q: What are the exact step-by-step instructions for replacing this filter and priming the Duramax fuel system? A: Because these model year Duramax engines do not have an electric lift pump in the fuel tank, changing the filter requires a manual priming sequence to prevent severe air locks in the high-pressure injection lines:
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the Water-In-Fuel (WIF) sensor at the bottom of the filter. Place a small catch pan beneath the assembly, loosen the plastic drain valve/sensor, and allow the trapped diesel fuel and moisture to drain out completely.
Using a standard filter wrench or a specialized Duramax fuel filter tool, unscrew the filter cartridge counterclockwise from the mounting head housing. Lower the filter carefully out of the engine bay (gaining access by pulling back the plastic passenger side inner fender liner can provide much more working room).
Ensure the old square cut gasket didn't stick to the aluminum mounting head adapter on the truck. Unscrew the plastic WIF sensor entirely from the old element. Clean the sensor threads, install a new lubricated rubber O-ring, and thread it firmly by hand into the bottom of the new ACDelco TP3018 filter. Lubricate the large upper filter seal with fresh diesel fuel.
Carefully guide the new filter up into position. Thread it onto the mounting head clockwise until the rubber seal makes flat contact, then tighten it an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn by hand. Replug the electrical wiring harness back into the bottom WIF sensor.
Locate the round aluminum mechanical primer pump plunger button on top of the fuel filter mounting head. Loosen the small plastic air bleeder screw on top of the head a few turns. Pump the large primer button repeatedly until clean, bubble-free diesel fuel begins to squirt out of the bleeder screw. Tighten the bleeder screw back down immediately, then continue pumping the primer button a few more times until it becomes completely rock hard to build up system pressure. Start the truck and check the fender well for leaks.
