Prep the work area and position your container
Position a heavy-duty drain pan or bucket underneath
1.Prep the work area and position your container:Position a heavy-duty drain pan or bucket underneath.

Park the truck on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and shut down the engine. Allow the motor to cool slightly if it was running at full operating temperature to avoid severe oil burns. Locate the oil filter assembly on the side of the Cummins engine block and slide a high-capacity drain pan directly underneath.

Unscrew and remove the dirty filter
Turn counterclockwise using a heavy-duty tool
2.Unscrew and remove the dirty filter:Turn counterclockwise using a heavy-duty tool.

Fit a heavy-duty commercial filter strap wrench or large oil filter cup wrench around the upper section of the canister body. Turn it counterclockwise to break the seal. Carefully spin the old filter completely off the threaded mounting stud, keeping the heavy canister perfectly upright as you lower it out to prevent dumping oil down the side of the engine block.

3
Clean the mounting head and inspect the old seal
Wipe away any accumulated sludge or road grit
3.Clean the mounting head and inspect the old seal:Wipe away any accumulated sludge or road grit.

Look closely at the bottom of the old filter to ensure the thick rubber sealing gasket came off with it. If the old seal is stuck to the engine head adapter, peel it off. Take a clean, lint-free rag and thoroughly wipe down the flat aluminum sealing surface and threaded mounting stud on the engine block to remove any residual grime.

4
Pre-fill and lubricate the new LF14002NN filter
Lubricate the upper rubber seal with clean engine oil
4.Pre-fill and lubricate the new LF14002NN filter:Lubricate the upper rubber seal with clean engine oil.

Because dry starts can cause immediate engine bearing wear on large-displacement diesels, fill the new LF14002NN filter with clean, fresh engine oil through the outer perimeter inlet holes before mounting it. Once filled, dip a clean finger into fresh oil and smear a thin, smooth film over the entire top rubber sealing ring to ensure a proper seal and easy removal next time.

5
Spin on the new filter by hand
Hand-tighten only; do not use a strap wrench to tighten
5.Spin on the new filter by hand:Hand-tighten only; do not use a strap wrench to tighten.

Guide the new pre-filled filter up to the mounting head. Thread it clockwise onto the center stud by hand to ensure it is not cross-threaded. Spin the canister up until the lubricated rubber gasket makes flush, flat contact with the metal base. From that exact point of contact, tighten the filter by hand an additional 1 full turn to compress the seal securely.

6
Start the truck and inspect for leaks
Check for proper oil pressure readings
6.Start the truck and inspect for leaks:Check for proper oil pressure readings.

Ensure the main engine oil pan drain plug is secure and the oil level is topped off to specification. Start the engine and let it run at a smooth base idle. Watch your dashboard gauge cluster to ensure oil pressure builds correctly within a few seconds. Step down and visually inspect the base of the new LF14002NN filter to verify there are absolutely no oil drips or weeping leaks.

❓ Quick FAQ

Which trucks/engines does this fit?
Cummins ISX, ISX12, and X12 engines used in major Class 8 semis — Freightliner Cascadia, Kenworth T680/W900, Peterbilt 389/579, Volvo VNL, International ProStar/LT, Mack Pinnacle/Anthem, and Western Star 5700XE.

How is NanoNet® better than legacy filters like the LF9081?
Unlike older cellulose/synthetic combo media, NanoNet® uses a consistent fiber web that captures 98.7% of contaminants down to 4 microns without restricting oil flow, handling high soot loads and pressure spikes better for extended-drain fleet use.

How do I replace this filter?

  1. Park on level ground, shut off the engine, and place a drain pan underneath.
  2. Remove the old filter counterclockwise with a strap or cup wrench.
  3. Clean the mounting surface and confirm the old gasket came off with the filter.
  4. Pre-fill the new filter with fresh oil through the outer holes and lubricate the top seal.
  5. Hand-thread the new filter on, then tighten an additional full turn after contact.
  6. Top off the oil, start the engine, and check gauge pressure and the filter base for leaks.
